The Jenkins family photo session at Provin Trails in Grand Rapids, Michigan turned out to be one of those perfect late-fall afternoons that feel like a small gift from nature. The sun was warm, the trees were glowing, and somehow, their two kids were full of smiles from start to finish. As a parent of three myself—who don’t always jump for joy at photo time—I was definitely wondering what their secret was, but it wasn't even the viral 'ice cream' hack. It honestly seemed as if it’s just who they are: a happy, easygoing bunch who genuinely love being together.
We spent the session putting all their smiling practice to use, doing a little dancing, and laughing at the goofiness of children. There was no pressure to “get it right.” Instead, we focused on just being there together and doing something most families haven't done in a hot minute, getting photos all together. The Jenkins family made it easy to capture what I love most about photographing families—those individual personalities shining through and providing tangible memories to look back on in the years to come.
What stood out most wasn’t just how photogenic they were, but how grounded they seemed in each other. It’s refreshing to photograph families who value connection over perfection, who show up ready to just be themselves. The Jenkins reminded me that the most meaningful images come from a relaxed sense of love, connection, and laughter; not perfect poses or matching outfits.
Provin Trails, with its tall pines and golden light, offered the perfect space for that kind of authenticity. Looking back at these photos, I’m reminded of how special it is to document families who let kids be themselves, are just happy to be there together, and who see beauty in the real moments that make life theirs.
